Monogram Holiday Napkins

A few weeks ago I was talking to my mom on the phone and she asked me if I had any ideas of something she could give close neighbors, friends or teachers for the holidays. I thought of a few ideas but thought that making personalized monogram holiday napkins would be the perfect gift.
Here is what you need:
1. Fabric paint or
Acrylic craft paint + a textile medium
2. Cloth napkins
(enough for the receiver to have one for each person in their family)
3. A piece of scrap fabric
4. Letter Stencil (I used "A" for my last name)
5. Decorative Stencil
6. Stipple Brush or bristled paint brush
7. Plate or container to put paint in
I used acrylic craft paint that I already had at my home and mixed it with Anita's Textile Medium (about $1.50 at Hobby Lobby) to make it work with fabrics (you should be able to launder the napkins and the paint stay put).

I mixed by textile medium and acrylic paint before hand
(one part textile medium and two part acrylic paint).
I would suggest testing out your stencil before hand on a scrap of fabric. This way you can test out what colors you might like best and practice your stippling with your stencil.

After figuring out the way I wanted to lay out my design on my practice fabric, I marked on the stencil where I wanted my letter to sit on the corner of my napkin. I placed a line on the top and left side of the stencil that lined up with the stitching in the napkin. If you are worried about keeping your stencil in place you might want to add a little tape to the sides to keep it in place.

I bought this set of 8 napkins at Marshall's for my family (Merry Christmas to me!!).
I used an "A" for our last name
This stencil has gotten some use as you can see.

Place a little paint on your brush and stipple the paint into your stencil. I think the key
to not having the paint bleed outside of the stencil is to use less paint on your
brush and to just build up the paint on the napkin with more stippling.

Repeat the last step with your decorative stencil.
Ta Da! Happy Holidays!!

I had a stencil with multiple holiday themed characters and couldn't decide on what stencil I wanted to do so I did all of them! A different one for each napkin.

You could use one of the wrapping ideas from this post to wrap your napkins.
I hope this got your creative juices flowing!
